Christmas Puppies

I was just hugging on my dog and one of my cats and thinking how lucky I am to have them.  And then I thought of all of you out there who found a squiggly package under your tree and are just starting on the wonderful journey of getting to know your new companion; all the children who are just learning the comfort and joy of having a dear little puppy or kitten curl up beside them on their pillow at night.  How much sweeter that sleep!

Yes, there is all that training to do and the chewed up shoes to toss away, but how worth it it is!  Once the lessons are learned and the bonds are made, ahead of you lay years of laughter and friendship to enrich your life.

Keep each other warm.

Another Long Underwear Day

Another Long Underwear Day

The temperatures have been quite comfortable this week, even getting up into the 50’s, but not today.  I wore three layers plus a warm scarf as Tookie and I went for our morning walk.  How does she do it?  I am freezing and my nose is running but she still wants to go out to the back yard and play with squirrels.  How much warmer can that coat actually be?  I still don’t need the booties because there is no snow on the ground… but it is cold.  I meant to say that Tookie doesn’t need her booties… I sure do!  The cats are smarter; they don’t even want to stand in the open doorway and watch her run around in the yard, let alone join her.  Much nicer upstairs curled up in bed or sitting at an insulated window watching the world go by.

Stay cozy and hope you had a lovely Christmas

Remember the Care Givers

Christmas Day

Hope you woke to Happy Day filled with love, laughter and wagging tails.

Don’t forget a thoughtful gift of thanks for those who take such good care of your pets.  Doesn’t have to be much, just something to show you appreciate all that they do to keep your little loved ones happy, healthy and lovely.

For example:

e       Your Groomer

e       Walker

e       House sitter or neighbor who checks when you can’t get home on time

e       Vet

And of course

If someone you care about has recently lost a pet, show him or her you understand the loss by giving a gift directly related to that pet… as the items on Peternity.

Merry Christmas from all of us at Peternity

The God of Frolic

"The dog was created especially for children. He is the god of frolic."
Henry Ward Beecher
(1813 - 1887)

Twas the day before Christmas . . . and since it is the season of giving I thought I would
post part of a wish list from the shelter that I mentioned yesterday. It has some “gift”
suggestions that would probably be helpful for any animal shelter in your area.

Sanctuary Wish List
• Stuffed Toys
• Small sized dog cookies (better for using as treats!)
• Crate Liners
• Towels – large
• Flat sheets
• Large Dog-Tire Toys or hard rubber balls (Soccer size or bigger)
• Nylabones
• Large sterilized beef shin bones
• Blankets: boiled wool is best as can be washed and dog nails don't get caught it them
• Stainless steel dog food bowls
• Stamps
• Home Depot or Lowes gift certificates always needed and welcomed!

Of course nothing is as wonderful to get as your love . . . and the hugs and kisses that go with it.

Shelters & Sanctuaries

There are so many wonderful people out there doing great work for animals that cannot help themselves and I plan on occasionally highlighting some of them. It is also my hope that you may discover inspiration here to be a part of their efforts to improve the lives of these sweet creatures.

If you are considering helping an animal in some way, you might want to take a look at Animal Haven . Following is a quote explaining part of what they do:

We’re a no-kill shelter and sanctuary that gives many deserving cats and dogs with chronic illness or other problems the extra time and care they need for a chance to find loving homes.” You can “choose a needy animal and receive updates on your pet. You can visit, send treats or toys – even take your pet home for good. Or sponsor a pet in someone’s name as a very special gift.”

Doesn’t that sound wonderful? Even if you can’t have a pet in your own home, for one reason or another, you can still make a big difference in a life and give yourself the joy of watching what your gift accomplishes.

Groggy & Bleary Eyed

All groggy and bleary eyed this morning. Sleep has eluded me this past week and so this morning I decided to take Tookie (my new Shih Tzu) out at 4 AM. I did this not only to relieve her, but in hopes that she wouldn’t want to wake me a couple of hours later... if I was lucky enough to go back to sleep. She was so confused and didn’t want to get out of bed! Then she didn’t want to come down the stairs. “What the heck is she up to now?” After much coaxing she agreed to go into the back yard if I kept her company, but it wasn’t much fun… the squirrels were still all cozy in their nests. No body to play with, no noises to investigate and nothing scary to bark at. Come on Mom, let’s go back to bed!

Hope y’all got a good night's sleep.

Gifts of Love!

I came across this website www.heartishot.com the other day and thought "what a beautiful way to send love around the world!" In addition to providing support and community for you at Peternity, we also try to promote hope and love. An integral part of the grieving process is to be able to start to look forward, to try to focus on all of the little things in our lives that remind us of the beauty of life and regeneration. We have so much to be thankful for. Send some love around the world and make another person feel warmth and joy in their heart.

Have a beautiful day,

Colleen

Welcome and Booties

Good Morning! The sun is shining beautifully today, here in New York City, and almost all of the snow has disappeared from the ground, sad for me but easier on our four legged friends.

This is the first blog of my first blog; I don’t think that I have even read one before so I have been a bit nervous. What will I write? Will I be able to make a contribution and will it be interesting enough for you to want to be a part of it? Will anyone even read it? About animals I know a bit… and feel a lot. I have had cats and dogs who have been a big part of my life and heart since I was twelve. You may have read a couple of articles I have written about them for Peternity this year. Although I would love to, I have had no extended experience with larger animals or the fascinating small (maybe scaly) ones; so, feel free to share your thoughts on any and all creatures. I hope you will join in the conversation we start today about these friends of ours, sharing your stories, thoughts and questions, your heartbreaks and your joys.

I had intended to open this by simply introducing myself, but last night I was given a surprise gift. While outside around 11 PM with Tookie, my new puppy, I met my neighbor Jay for the first time. What a sweetie and how dear he is with animals! He was out with his beautiful pitbull and after we had been chatting for a few minutes he said, “wait here” and ran into his house and came back with a book on dog recipes called “Throw Me A Bone” by Sally Sampson and four little black booties for Tookie's feet. Sweet, huh? I may have comments on the book after I have had a chance to read it, but I would be interested in hearing bootie stories now, since this is my first dog in a snowy clime. Do they stay on? Do the dogs get used to them. Can you walk and laugh at the same time? Though I realize it is necessary, I have always found the sight of a booted doggie hysterical so I will attach a photo of Tookie after our next snowfall.

Welcome and thank you for joining us.
